Nugent Herrmann Welch OBE (1881-1970) was New Zealand’s first official war artist, producing 32 watercolour paintings during his time as a soldier within the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the First World War. He is thought to have attended evening classes at the Wellington Technical College School of Art under Arthur Riley and James Nairn. Welch helped to revive the Wellington Art Club and regained the use of Pumpkin Cottage, a rustic Silverstream cottage established by Nairn in 1895 as a retreat for those artists exploring Impressionism. Welch was on the council of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and part of the management committee of the National Art Gallery. He is most well known for his watercolour landscapes.

Leonard’s portrait of Nugent Welch (1957) is held in the Alexander Turnbull Library and can be found on page 330 of Mitchell & Mitchell: A Father & Son Arts Legacy (2018 Alsop, Reed, Wolfe).
